Peter Vaughan, the actor who played Maester Aemon Targaryen on Game of Thrones, died in England on Tuesday, December 6, his agent confirmed to Deadline. He was 93.
“This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan has passed away at approximately 10:30 [GMT] this morning,” agent Sally Long-Innes said in a statement to the site. “He died peacefully with his family around him.”
Vaughan was most recently known for his role as Maester Aemon, the elderly, blind scholar of the Night’s Watch in HBO’s Game of Thrones. He made several guest appearances in the first five seasons of the show, from 2011 to 2015, before his character died of old age in season 5.
The English actor was also known for his role as Harry “Grouty” Grout in the BBC sitcom Porridge, despite having only appeared in three episodes. He later reprised the fan-favorite role in the 1979 film of the same name.
Born Peter Olm in April 1923, Vaughan started his career in the Wolverhampton Repertory theatre before joining the army during World War II, during which he served as an officer in Normandy, Belgium and the Far East.
The Wem, Shropshire, England, native made his onscreen debut in the 1959 remake of The 39 Steps. He earned his first starring role in 1964’s Smokescreen. Three years later, he starred opposite Frank Sinatra in The Naked Runner.
Vaughan later starred in the BBC’s 1972 adaptation of A Warning to the Curious, 1980’s 13-part Thames Television series Fox, the 1981 fantasy Time Bandits and the 1993 drama The Remains of the Day, among other works.
Vaughan is survived by his second wife, Lillias Walker. He was previously married to Billie Whitelaw from 1952 to 1966.
