Proud parents or exposing their kids to the big, bad world? Piers Morgan criticized David and Victoria Beckham for posting cute Instagram clips of their 11-year-old son, Cruz, showing off his musical talent.
The British journalist, 51, expressed his thoughts on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, April 19, singling out soccer legend David’s most recent video of Cruz, who seems to have inherited his pop superstar mother’s talent, singing “Cups” from Pitch Perfect, which is originally known as “When I’m Gone” by the Carter Family. In the footage, Cruz does the signature cup-flipping routine and performs a pretty adorable rendition of the song for his famous parents. This clip followed a video posted by Victoria a few days earlier of Cruz belting out the 2004 hit “Hope,” which went viral after viewers compared his voice to a young Justin Bieber.
While most people thought the performance was very impressive, Morgan said he didn’t think David and Victoria should be sharing the video with the world. “You get these celebrity parents and they bang on about protecting their kids and privacy and so on and there they are Instagramming this 11-year-old to gazillions of people trying to make him a star, like Brooklyn [Beckham] is now a photographer,” he said.
The couple’s oldest son, Brooklyn, shot Burberry’s latest fragrance campaign earlier this year. David, 40, and Victoria, 42, are also parents to Romeo, 13, and Harper, 4.
Morgan said he thinks children should decide for themselves if they want to be in the spotlight. “I’m like, can’t they just be kids really? And then when they leave school, make their own decisions? If they want to go into this kind of thing, then great,” the TV personality said. “This, to me, it’s shameless,” he added.
Although Morgan may not have enjoyed Cruz’s performance, then Beckhams certainly did. “Look at my little man go,” proud dad David captioned the post. “Ridiculously cute and the enjoyment in his face whilst doing it just makes us smile.”
