Second Gordon Ramsay Chef Commits Suicide

A New Jersey restaurateur once featured on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares -- who was told by the TV chef, 43, that his debt-ridden eatery was "about to swim down the Hudson" -- has committed suicide.

The body of 39-year-old Joseph Cerniglia was found floating in the river after jumping off the George Washington Bridge in NYC, the New York Post reports.

Cerniglia, a married dad of three, owned Campania in Fair Lawn, NY, and was said to be deep in debt.

While on Kitchen Nightmares, the hotheaded Ramsey once told Cerniglia: "Why did you become a chef-owner if you haven't a clue how to run a business?"

On the show, Cerniglia lamented, "I'm financially in trouble -- the debt of the restaurant alone is overwhelming. My personal debt -- wife, kids mortgage -- that's a lot of debt ... I owe my purveyors about $80,000 right now in cold, hard cash . . . I can't see us going on another year." Sobbing on the show, his wife added, "If this business fails, we will lose everything."

Cerniglia's family posted a message on his Facebook page, thanking "all of the friends that have sent their condolences" and asking that donations be sent to support his widow and their three sons.

Cerniglia is the second chef to commit suicide after appearing on one of Ramsay's cooking shows.

Rachel Brown, 41, shot herself in her family's Dallas home a year after appearing on 2006's Hell's Kitchen.

Chef Ramsey is the MAN!!! He goes to places to help them, I find it Sick and Degrating that anyone would try to blame him for some depressed lunatic that got in over his head. 1st off, i wanna send my deepest congrets to the family very sorry about your loss:-(. 2nd This is how surious being a resturant owner can be, people remember becoming a chef/owner of your own resturant does not mean your gonna make loads of money from the start. Its not a 9-5 job, its your life! career does'nt even come close to what this is and Gordon Ramsay tries to tell people its not a personal thing, this is the life of a chef, US Mag, needs to make publicy so this is how they doi it, wow unbelieveable!

Thank you Sherrie Pace Christensen for your comment on Gordon Ramsey and Carniglia. How dare US Magazine report something so tragic on depression and make it seem as Gordon Ramsay was somewhat responsible for his suicide. Thank God Gordon Ramsay gave him the tools so he had 3 years of success for his restaurant. My thoughts and prayers to his family

If anyone had bothered to gather some facts before you're misguided and hurtful comments, you would have learned that Carniglia appeared on the show in 2007, three years before his death. You would also learn that Ramsay did a follow up at his restaurant, where it had become a success with the signature meatball dish. Carniglia stated that he was doing very well, both in the restaurant and at home. He was sending orders of his meatballs all over the country. He stated he was able to now pay is purveyors on time. With all that said, mental illness is a serious disease. No one on this comment board nows anything that was going on in his life or mind. I would guess only those closest to him might have had any idea what stressors he was dealing with in his life. Shame on US Magazine for sensationalizing this tragedy! I wish the best to his family.

What exactly is the matter with people these days? Has everyone gone completely nuts?!

  • November 23, 2010 - 9:11am Jeff Mirenda

Are you people for real? "Never a call to be unkind"! "Take managerial classes"! "He told her she was worthless". Boo Hoo! I read some of these comments, and realize this is exactly what's wrong with our country, and why we are in this sad state now. Don't hurt anyones feelings. Reward them for just trying, forget about succeeding. Tell them their great, even if they suck! Take a class, because some idiot that teaches it, needs to tell you how to live your own life. Really? Why not just take some personal responsiblity! The truth "will" set you free! Even if it doesn't make you feel all warm and fuzzy!

you sew what you reap and live with it .we all have choice.

Terribly sad. It's okay to tell someone the hard truth and give them business advice, but there is never any call to be unkind. It's not good for your soul and it certainly doesn't help theirs to be so brutal. But that doesn't sell these days does it. Sick. Time to re-evaluate, people. You create the society that you want to live in and if you consume and support hateful programming then you live with the outcome.

Gordon Ramsey may not be at fault but may have attributed to the cause of death to an already disturbed guy. The show should do a much more thorough screening of contestants to prevent cases like this. Gordon Ramsey himself should really take classes in people skills. Last time I watched this show he threw a pan on the floor and belittled a woman and told her she was worthless. Really? Being a great mentor and boss does not mean to put down people and throw pots and pans around like a child with a temper tantrum. He needs as much help as did Cerniglia.

Cerniglia had deep issues that involved not only his business, but his family. His suicide, I feel, is no fault of Gordon Ramsey. Mr.Cerniglia needed therapy. He was grasping at straws. My sincerest condolences to his wife and sons, his entire family, and friends all of whom, he chose to leave behind. Sad event, indeed.

typographical error: > (U is next to I) Should be, of course, USING . In my opinion, what G.R. 'cooks up'; still 'smells' of "-Rating, by USING hard-pressed, distraught cases." Therefore, SUGGESTION still: SPONSORS CANCEL THE ? G.R. 'RACKET'.

First suicide, 'exception'. SECOND SUICIDE !? Appears Gordon Ramsey is USUNG hard-pressed, distraught cases; to bring notoriety to his ? 'advice'. Rating at the expense of hard-pressed, distraught cases! SUGGESTION: SPONSORS, CANCEL THE ? G.R. 'RACKET'.
