It's nearly the end! And as David Letterman counts down to his final Late Show on Wednesday, May 20, Tom Hanks made sure he had a memento of his final appearance on the now-legendary talk show host's program, in the form of a selfie!

Appearing on the show on Monday, May 18, Hanks decided small talk had to take second place to recording this historic moment on his cell phone. And when he whipped out his very own baby blue selfie stick, Letterman was intrigued.

"Rita [Wilson] announced that we will never ever have a selfie stick in the house," Hanks said, as he attached the device onto his phone and prepared to say "cheese!" with his celebrity companion. However Wilson's opinion was overruled when they discovered the selfie sticks were for sale all over Florence. "That's birthplace of the Renaissance," Hanks explained, smiling.

Struggling slightly with the apparatus, Hanks was finally ready to take the snap and instructed his friend how to pose to look his best. "Above the chin, above the chin," he explained as he lifted the camera, and eventually took the snap.

"It gives the impression that someone else has taken the picture for you," Letterman remarked as he looked at the end result with his guest.

"Which will work for you Dave," Hanks replied cheekily, "Because it will mean you've been on vacation with a friend."

Watch the video above and savor every minute of the laughs with Letterman — there's only two more left!
