Mini Cher! Miley Cyrus is channeling '70s Cher in a Bob Mackie-influenced design as part of her Bangerz tour. Despite being heavily criticized by the pop legend for her raunchy MTV VMAs performance back in September, Cyrus paid homage to the icon as she zipped down a giant tongue slide for her show entrance in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday, Feb. 20.
The 21-year-old's ensemble is remarkably similar to the Mackie-designed costume worn by the "Woman's World" singer, now 67, over forty years ago on the opening night of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1973. The Oscar winner wore the same costume again on an episode of her TV series the Sonny and Cher Show.
Cyrus' costume includes a blazing red, long-sleeve midriff-revealing jacket encrusted with stones and features an outrageous white ostrich feather cape. Cher's version from the '70s was essentially the same concept except her costume was blue and included matching ostrich feather pants. The younger star, however, ditched the plumage bottoms for skin-tight briefs.
Cyrus has enlisted a series of high-profile designers -- Roberto Cavalli, Marc Jacobs, and Mackie's creative team -- to create skin-baring risque looks for her Bangerz tour. "Clothes for me -- or lack thereof -- say a lot," the "Adore You" singer said during a press conference last month. Indeed, she has gone down a wild path for her latest tour: some of the stunts include the singer touching herself, grinding on props, and using her infamous foam finger to simulate sex.
Would Cher approve? As long as it's a high-quality performance! "I'm not old fashioned," she remarked in an interview last September. "She could have come out naked, and if she'd just rocked the house, I would have said, 'You go, girl,'" Cher sniped last fall of Cyrus' talked-about VMAs performance.
The Bangerz tour kicked off last Friday, Feb. 14 and ends in mid-June. Tell Us: what do you think of Cyrus' Cher-inspired costume?
