Mischa Barton Goes on Bizarre Rant About Hospitalization

Friday – September 11, 2009 – 11:53am

On Friday's The View, Mischa Barton got flustered when asked about her recent hospitalization.

Although she admits she was "completely overwhelmed" by life, The Beautiful Life star, 23, called her hospitalization "silly."

"I mean, really it was blown out of proportion, so it's kind of silly now to be talking about it because I'm so fine now, but it was really just a bad time for me," she said. "It was sort of one of those things that was like a perfect storm. Everything happened at once.

When Barbara Walters pointed out that she was placed in a psychiatric ward, Barton shifted gears, blaming it all on dental work.

"Right, I mean, it was just ... I was overwhelmed," she said. "I had too much work going on. I had a surgery for my wisdom teeth that went really badly. I had been in the hospital. I had two surgeries on my wisdom teeth. I had four taken out and they had gotten it really badly wrong. They had to drill into my jaw and I was just in really excruciating pain."

She continued, "I had an infection and a dry socket and I woke up on a Sunday morning and there was no doctor available. I was trying to take the minimum amount of pain killers and get through it because I had to go to work soon and I was getting ready to go do this show, The Beautiful Life, and meanwhile I still had a schedule to travel. I was going to Europe. I was going to London. I had things to do and I was prepping to do photo shoots and I was just overwhelmed. I had so much work to do and the surgery had gone so badly for me. And I think that I was just starting to feel completely overwhelmed. It was just too much to have this surgery go so wrong."

Why, then, was she put in a psychiatric hospital if her pain was physical, Joy Behar asked.

"When they take you into the hospital for something when it goes really wrong if you're having a meltdown and you say something like 'I feel like I want to die,' ... they start injecting you with things to calm down," she explained. "Like I'm petrified of needles. Like absolutely petrified ... you can't come anywhere ... I had my blood drawn once in my life for my insurance."

Alas, Barton says she is doing better these days.

"I just figure that if you hit rock bottom like that ... and you're around people, you know, you realize I'm nothing like these people," she said. "I have a career, I worked so hard for it. I'm such a positive person and I really ... I think you can overcome anything and for me having that kind of chronic pain for the first time in my life, like being in serious pain was such a wakeup call because, you know, I've seen friends go though terrible, terrible pain and I've worked in hospitals and never experienced it myself. And I have such a newfound respect for people who live with that kind of pain and I think it was just a wakeup call for me about life and respecting life so much more."

I agree with Georgia30 and also believe Mischa's story. Those of us who have time to read these articles and post comments don't understand the kind of pressure actors are under and how crazy their schedules can get. If you are in so much pain from the kind of dental problems she was having, you can't get sleep. Then have a terribly hard schedule on top of all that... you stress about everything you have to do, and traveling out of the country and worrying that you might have a medical emergency. I say give her a break.

If she can't come up with a better excuse, she should say nothing at all.

As someone who has suffered with a mental illness, I find her "holier than thou" attitude offensive. "I just figure that if you hit rock bottom like that ... and you're around people, you know, you realize I'M NOTHING LIKE THESE PEOPLE," she said. "I have a career, I worked so hard for it. I'm such a positive person and I really ... I think you can overcome anything..." That's such a degrading comment & only adds to the negative stigma of people with mental illnesses. Mischa, believe it or not, most of "those people" (icky!) have careers, work hard, have personalities, try to stay positive and live with dignity. You say after your illegal drugs & DUIs. Ugh. Why is it ok in Hollywood, cool even, to be strung out on cocaine, but it's not ok to have a genetic chemical imbalance? She's just feeding the stereotype that having a psychiatric challenge is something to be ashamed of. It's not. Actually, many of "those people" have a high aptitude for creativity & brilliance.

i never comment on stuff like this but mischa is actually making sense. i work in healthcare and if a person makes any sort of comment about hurting themselves or others, that person can be medically transferred (sometimes against their will)to a physciatric unit for evaluation. it is what we call a 1013 in georgia.and yes will sedate you against your will and i imagine that could be very traumatic. don't think people realized how powerful painkillers or any narcotic medication can be. even if taken correctly and for the appropriate amount of time, this type of medication can severely alter your mental stability. that added with the severe pain that comes with surgery, even wisdom teeth extraction, could actually cause emotional and physical distress. combine that with a jetset lifestyle and a full day of work, not to mention the stresses of media and judgement, and i think what this girl is saying makes total sense. furthermore, why don't some of you critics try being interviewed in front of the world, there to promote a show and have questions that invade your privacy and make a mockery of the treatment you have recieved to get better.she has gone back to work and not sat on her ass feeling sorry for herself or hiding her face in shame. good luck, mischa. i don't know you and never will, but i admire and respect you for facing the questions and life like an adult.

I've been on the hold she was on....you have to do something messed up to get there. she needs a new publicist/speech.

Her lies are starting to sound "true" to me. At least it's starting to make sense, even though there's a part of me that still doesn't believe her.

It's scary that she has only had her "blood drawn once in her life." Does this mean she does not get a basic physical every year? that's not safe!

Hey, I've had cavities, a root canal, wisdom teeth pulled, caps and crowns put in.....It sucked, but it didn't cause me to go wacko! If pulling teeth makes her crazy, just wait til real life hits her and she's on the street with no job.

What is so "bizarre" about what she said? US always makes normal things sound "bizarre"! They are like a group of teenagers who talk smack about everyone.

The View hosts should have shown this video clip to Mischa and asked her why she looked like this a few weeks before she landed in the psych ward. http://www.handbag.com/fashion/mischa-barton-harrods-sale-opening/v1

I watched the show and she didn't rant or get flustered like the report she simply answered the questions she was asked, this isn't even news.

All the things that happened to her in regards to her wisdom teeth happened to me. The only difference is that I didn't end up in a psych ward. What a ridiculous sounding excuse.

I got my 4 wisdom teeth out this summer, they were all the way in so I was just numb, not knocked out. It is painful afterward and I also got a dry socket which hurts but she sounds like she is using this as an excuse. Why would she had 4 teeth out while so busy??
