American Horror Story: Freak Show Opening Credits Are as Creepy as You’d Expect

Consider Us sufficiently freaked out! Ryan Murphy continued to whet fans’ appetites for American Horror Story: Freak Show on Wednesday, Oct. 1, this time with a sneak peek of the creepy opening credits sequence.

“Halloween Season has begun!” he tweeted. “Here’s the Freak Show Main Titles. 1 WEEK until premiere. Happy October! #WeAreAllFreaks”

In keeping with the theme of AHS‘ fourth installment, the credits feature sinister-looking clown figurines (some with rotating heads), cartoonish moving skeletons, fanged toy monkeys, and mutant dolls with extra (and extra-terrifying) body parts. And if that’s not enough to spook you, it’s all set to an eerie soundtrack of carnival music.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Freak Show is set in Jupiter, Fla., in the 1950s, and follows a group of uniquely gifted performers. AHS vet Jessica Lange will play the “maestro” of the bunch, alongside a bearded Kathy Bates, a three-breasted Angela Bassett, and a two-headed Sarah Paulson (whose character is actually a set of conjoined twins).

“I think this year, without a doubt, will be my favorite,” Lange told EW last month. “In a way, it was an idea that I had wanted to explore for a while. I think just the richness of it and the time and the place and the characters — I just think it’s going to be unique. And I think, to my mind, what I’ve seen already and what we’ve done, it will far surpass anything we’ve done before.”
