It wasn't easy for Janet Jackson to pay tribute to her late brother Michael at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

During rehearsals, "Janet was getting a little emotional," says choreographer Tyce Diorio, who performed during the show.

After a medley involving Diorio and other Jackson-esque dancers performing Michael's past hits, Janet, 43, took the stage to dance and sing to their 90s duet "Scream."

See what all the stars all wore to the VMAs

"It's never been done before and to have an artist like Janet assemble all these choreographers together, it just feels really good," Diorio tells Usagazine.com. "Of course, Michael really inspired all of us, so we're really happy to be there and be a part of it and dance with each other.

He tells Usmagazine.com "the most emotional moment was just standing all together in the room. His music was playing, and we all had our costumes on, and we just kind of looked around each other. I don't think it could ever be replicated again. It was just a moment in time between dancers and choreographers. It was really exciting."

Before the tribute, Madonna also remembered the King of Pop, who died June 25 at age 50 of acute propofol intoxication.

She joked that her two sons, Rocco, 9, and David, 4, are now obsessed with Michael. Said Madonna, "There's a whole lot of crotch grabbing and Moonwalking going on in my house!"

FIRST OF ALL to the anonymous person who said janet is trying to make money off of mike. That is so NOT TRUE. she kept quite the most UNLIKE jermaine who is feeding off of all the attention. Also she was NOT lip syncing. You Could tell by the way she sounded. which was kind of rough at times and she would also loose her breath at some moments. BUT she did GREAT. so STOP complaining .!

She was for sure lip syncing. She was only out of breath cause she wasn't probably hadn't danced for a while since before then and she's like 40 it's not so easy to just get back in there after a break. I don't see how her being out of breath proves she was singing.

I've lost a sibling, and no matter what, it's painful...bravo Janet...it must've been so painful to even hear this song let alone perform. Bravo!

SHE DIDNT LIP SYNC!!! WATCH AGAIN!!! RIGHT BEFORE SHE DROPS TO THE FLOOR ON HER KNEES AND SHE SINGING SHES RUNNING OUT OF BREATH- SHE WAS TOTALLY OUT OF BREATH WHILE SHE WAS SINGING- THE HAIR FLIP PART WHILE SHE WAS SINGING WAS ALL HER- SHE KNOWS HOW TO HARMONIZE AND DANCE AT THE SAME TIME- ITS HER SPECIALTY- SHE DID NOT LIP SYNC!!! GO BACK AND LOOK AGAIN- PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO RIGHT BEFORE AND AFTER SHE DOES THE FLOOR PART- SHES SO OUT OF BREATH THAT SHE LOSES IT FOR A QUICK SECOND- IF SHE WAS LIP SYNCING THE DANCE WOULDVE BEEN PERFECT- SHE WAS SINGING AND DANCING HARD!! I DOUBT SHE WANTED TO FAKE THE FUNK WHEN IT CAME TO HER DEAD BROTHERS TRIBUTE- SHE LIT THE HOUSE ON FIRE THAT NIGHT

LMAO!!!!!!!! @ ANON ...The song is about dancing you maniacal freak! AHHAHAHAHAHA! You as the listener are free to read into it however you want but don't judge her for your messed up interpretation.

  • September 15, 2009 - 9:15pm To idiots and Anonymous losers...

If LaToya had a career do you think you'd be able to say all those things about her. So what if she was there first. All that means is she was the nearest UNBUSY on by. Personality? The same hoe that sold her brother out to sell a book?! No wonder she wore that big ridiculous hat to his memorial to hide her face. All these years later deep down she is still ashamed and probably feels guilty. Just because Michael is gone doesn't mean Janet's life should end. She threw herself into her work. So what lost of people do it to cope. Changing the way she lives her life is the last thing her brother would want her to do.

The dancing at the VMA's was cool, but I'm really tired of Janet lip-synching. I'm glad she did a tribute but I like Latoya's song Home tribute better. Latoya's vocals are much better and she is the only one with any personality in the family and she was the first there at the hospital, signed the death certificate, and planned the memorial, and has since promoted Michael's charities. Janet went right back to work on Tyler Perry's movie and back in the studio to record yet another sex song with a dated beat just in time to make money off of her brother's death. Sad, Sad, Sad.

of course she's emotional, it's her BROTHER!! bless u janet, i know it hurts

  • September 15, 2009 - 12:40pm RayMabry

Um just cause her vocals in the performance sounded different from the album version doesn't mean she wasnt lip syncing. They obviously re-recorded it for this performance. Go watch it again and watch it real good especially when her voice stays the same while her head is violently shaking. Oh and also was there anyone that thinks that madonnas speech was a tad bit self indulgent. Beautiful but too much me and I.

What Madonna said about Michael was BEAUTIFUL. And Janet and all those top notch dancers was AMAZING. I loved it.

  • September 14, 2009 - 5:24pm Svetlana

It was so sweet of Janet! She was awesome! Great tribute, really. It was sad to see them like this though: she - on stage and he - on the screen only.... I miss you so much, Michael! God bless your soul.

  • September 14, 2009 - 5:17pm Anonymous

I'm not sure what any of you heard but go listen to the original recording and listen to the tribute performance, Janet's vocals are completely different. They're much grittier and she changed up a few things. Don't assume janet is lipsynching just cuz you've been told or seen her do it in the past. That's crazy. I don't know how anyone with ears couldn't hear the differences in this performance. Check your ears people!!! Anyway, Janet was AMAZING and what she put together was amazing!!

  • September 14, 2009 - 5:02pm RayMabry

I understand why she was lip-syncing You can't dance like that and sing at the same time no way. But I think she was pushed into doing that too soon. Just a few weeks ago when she was seen she wasn't even into shape yet and I did't really think the performance was on point at all but it's not really a big deal I didn't really even expect it to be

Although I hvnt seen it yet I know my GIRL slammed it down

  • September 14, 2009 - 3:25pm lainey

shut up all you moron's complaining about her performance and lipsyching. You people will pay money to see that no talented blonde britney perform and entire concert "live" and you listen to that other moronic blonde heidi. Janet had to do something that alot of us could not do. Can you imagine what her pain must be like and to get up in front of all those people while still grieving. Good job Janet, to you other idiot, @#$5 off
