OPENS FRIDAY 12/11

Colin Firth is devastating as a gay professor contemplating suicide after his lover dies in a car crash. Set in L.A. in 1962 and helmed by fashionista Tom Ford, the movie suffers a bit when the first-time director goes too heavy on the art direction (the prof sets out the suit and tie he wants to be buried in like he’s prepping for a photo shoot). Still, the acting soars. Watch for Julianne Moore’s small role as his BFF, who plants an aching kiss on him, showing she desires more than friendship.
