IN THEATERS FRIDAY 3/5
Tim Burton's 3-D, candy-colored retelling of the children's book ages Alice (Mia Wasikowska) to her late teens and sends her down a bunny hole into an eccentric dreamscape. There she meets The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and must protect the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) from her evil sister, the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). Spunky Wasikowska engages beautifully with Depp, who brings empathy to what could have been a cartoon character. The trippy tale may divide audiences -- Burton's version remains a children's story, though some may find it too over-the-top and idiosyncratic -- but to Us, it's a visual feast.

I love that it's more Brothers Grimm than Disney and Mia does a marvelous job as Alice in her late teens - awkward, unsure of her next step and in the cusp of womanhood - yup! it's a visual treat.
