Ryan Lochte was dumped over the phone by his girlfriend.

In some situations, even Ryan Lochte doesn't know what to do. During the talked-about May 26 episode of his E! reality series, What Would Ryan Lochte Do? the Olympic swimmer, 28, got a surprising phone call while out to dinner with his guy friends.

Noticing that it was his long distance on-and-off girlfriend of four years, Jaimee Hollier, Lochte said he felt compelled to answer it.

"I don't know why, but there's just something in me that was saying, 'Pick it up,'" he recalled in an on-camera interview afterwards.

Walking out to the street, Lochte heard the tone in Hollier's voice and turned to his show's cameras, shooing them away.

"Hold on … no no no no, for real," he tells the cameras in the show's clip. "Stop it, stop."

The cameras then leave him alone as he walks further down the road.

Explaining why he decided to not film what was said on the phone, Lochte explains, "There are certain things where it's not fair for her. I care about Jaimee, and I know how this conversation was gonna go, and I didn't want cameras there. I turned off the mic and started talking to her."

After the conversation, Lochte explained in a voiceover that he was "dumped" and returned to the restaurant where he told his friends what happened — and promptly asked for a beer.

Since Hollier, a junior sales manager, lived in London during filming, she only made a few appearances on Lochte's E! reality show.

During an episode before the breakup call, Lochte acknowledged that their long distance relationship was almost at a breaking point. Case in point? Although the two Skyped and chatted often, they were only able to see each in person a few times in the past year because of their busy schedules and the distance that separated them. Since they didn't fully commit to each other, Lochte did meet other girls and go on dates, but admitted there was a soft spot in his heart for Hollier.

"One day we'll either go all in or we'll say our goodbyes," Lochte said of Hollier. "We just haven't made a decision yet."

After his show wrapped filming, Lochte confirmed to Cosmopolitan that he was indeed single.

"I need someone who is able to hold her own — if a girl is really independent, that's a turn-on for me," he told the mag. "I want a best friend and a lover at the same time. And I want her to make me laugh. I like someone who doesn't care what people think — who's not afraid of making a fool out of herself."
