Perhaps not all of The Good Wife‘s characters will be gone for good? After CBS announced during a Super Bowl ad on Sunday, February 7, that the Emmy-winning drama’s current seventh season will be its last, series creators Robert and Michelle King told Us Weekly in a conference call with reporters on Monday, February 8, that a spinoff is a possibility.

Although the Kings said that nothing has currently been finalized regarding a follow-up, they are open to launching a new series with a supporting character, citing lawyers Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) or Patti Nyholm (Martha Plimpton) as possibilities. Julianna Margulies has starred as Alicia Florrick since its September 2009 launch.

“What would be fun is if you could find a way to spin off [a cast member] that wasn’t at the center stage of Good Wife because all of those characters, we wished we had more time with,” Robert said. “This show has always been geared around the Alicia character. I guess what would be appealing is pursuing a different ensemble.”

“At this point, nothing’s off the table,” Michelle said. “Sure, maybe — we’re not saying no to anything.”

Robert added that it would be ideal for any new Good Wife project to go into development soon, given that the original series’ sets are still intact: “We have a certain infrastructure. It would be lovely if we did anything like that, but it’s not really up to us.”

The pair said that they will change the season finale’s script a bit from what they had initially been planning, now that they know definitively that it will be the end of the series. The final run will include the return of former cast members Gary Cole (Kurt McVeigh) and possibly Jess Weixler (Robyn Burdine), but fans shouldn’t expect to see Archie Panjabi (Kalinda Sharma) stop by.

“It wouldn’t make any sense for her to come back,” Michelle said of Panjabi, whose character left at the end of season 6. There have been rumors for years of a feud between Margulies and Panjabi.

Margulies teased the series’ end last month when she said at an event that she would be “unemployed come April,” referring to when season 7 wraps.
