Marvel Comics fans were hitting the multiplex in droves this weekend, easily making X-Men: First Class the box office's must-see movie.

Raking in an estimated $56 million in box office receipts -- according to early Variety estimates Sunday -- the January Jones-James McAvoy flick easily beat second-place finisher The Hangover II, starring Bradley Cooper. Cooper's sequel earned $32.4 million, dropping 62 percent from its opening box office bow.

Angelina Jolie and Jack Black's Kung Fu Panda 2 fell to third place, earning $24.3 million. Coupled with this weekend's receipts, Jolie's flick finally passed the $100 million mark in total returns.

Rounding out the top five this weekend were Johnny Depp's swashbuckler Pirates of the Carribbean: On Stranger Tides ($18 million) and Bridesmaids, which took in $12.1 million.
