Millions watched as Couric, then 43, underwent her first ever-colonoscopy on March 7, 2000. The special report was part of the Today anchor's efforts to spread the word about colon cancer, which killed her husband, Jay Monahan, at age 42 in 1998. It worked — an Archives of Internal Medicine study in 2003 claimed that Couric's on-air procedure was associated with an increase in colonoscopy rates.
