Mia Michaels Quits So You Think You Can Dance

Thursday – October 15, 2009 – 11:36am

Emmy Award-winning choreographer Mia Michaels has quit FOX's So You Think You Can Dance, Usmagazine.com has confirmed.

"I am officially an adoring fan of SYTYCD...Thank U for 5 wonderful yrs," Michaels, 43, Twittered Wednesday night. "To create moments and movement for the world to share with me was a gift...Thanks SYTYCD and look forward to what's ahead for me...lookout world!"

See the day's top celeb news photos.

Earning an Outstanding Choreography Emmy Award in 2007, Michaels frequently appeared on the SYTYCD judging panel alongside permanent judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, who appears on the new cover of Us Weekly.

Michaels' announcement came mere hours after she appeared on a taped episode of SYTYCD, judging a set of season six hopefuls during the show's annual Las Vegas round.

The show's top 20 contestants will be revealed next Wednesday.

So very sad that she quit, the show is still phenomenal, but she is missed. I kept wondering when she was gonna choreograph and thought, where is she this season and then I googled it and found this and am very sad. She is truly an amazing choreographer, yes her dances are sometimes strange but always great for instance, the Bench (Heidi and Travis), Dancing in Heaven (Lacey and Neil), Addiction (Kayla and K?pono), The Butt Dance (Randi and Evan), the Crazy girlfriend (Katie and Twitch), The Bed (Kherington and Twitch) were all so memorable and phenomenal...I missed her this season and hope she decides to return to the show, but thank goodness we have Stacey Tookey (spelling?) and Travis Wall routines to replace hers. I have thoroughly enjoyed both of their routines so much, but I still miss Mia. I hope she doesn't have cancer...

I AM NOT SURE THE SHOW WILL BE THE SAME WITH OUT HERE. THERE SEEMS TO BE RUMORS THAT SHE WAS DIAGONOSED WITH BREST CANCER AND THAT IS THE REASON FOR HER BUZZ CUT. BUT WHO REALLY KNOWS! I LOVE HERE WITH OR WITHOUT HAIR THAT IS FOR SURE!

Love, Love, Love Mia Michaels and will miss her on the show

I thought her dances were more bizarre than beautiful. Did not enjoy them at all--I'm with the earlier poster who said if she saw a weird routine it was sure to be by Mia Michaels.

Did anyone see her buzz cut "hairdo" on the last episode of SYTYCD when they picked the Top 20? What is up with that? Talented, yes but really she can be all over the place. I hope she doesn't end up regretting her decision, but then she will ALWAYS have a spot on that show at any price. And she KNOWS it!

Mia is an absolute genius and I practically worship her! her pieces speak on a whole different level than other choreography and although there are still other good choreographers on the show, it will never be the same. I will miss her terribly.

To Andrea: Your comment is absolutely ridiculous. She is an award winning artist (particularly an Emmy) and is tremendously respected by her fellow colleagues. I am also astonished that you would suggest that she is jealous of certain dancers and find it quite hilarious. They should and do feel privilaged to have worked with such a wonderful and talented teacher. The only reason she is sometimes so harsh and critical is because she cares about these dancers. Her goal is to improve their dancing skills and prepare them for the harsh reality of their chosen career. The producers they will eventually audition for will be much more critical and sometimes heartbreaking. Her genre of contempary dance is probably the most demanding and difficult choreography because it must convey different emotions while telling a understandable story for the audience. I will definitely miss her personally along with her moving and beautiful art.

Rumors are flying that she has cancer which is why she left. I hope thats not true and she is ok!
  • October 23, 2009 - 8:15am Andrea Says:

I could care less. The woman has a huge mean streak and an obvious dislike for beautiful women. I'm all for the judges giving criticism because it will help the dancers grow, but it was obvious that Mia was jealous of certain dancers and tried to make their life miserable. I was so happy when Mary Murphy let her have it when Mia tried to make Brandon feel like shiot. I do have to say, that Mia was a little nicer once she was put in her place, but I won't shed any tears because she was leaving. I think she is a talented choreogragher but was never my favorite.

Also... I think it is only fair for her to be blunt to the dancers on the show if they did bad or needed to work on something. She is playing the role of an "auditioner", if thats even a word, and a coach. JUst because she is not all giggles and smiles when she is correcting someone doesnt mean she is rude. She has to be serious to get her point across. If I had been on the show, I would have only cared about what she had to say. Im glad she left for better things.

Thank god she left that stupid show. She is too professional for it. I have been waiting for this day to come.

Will miss her unique gift for telling a story through dance. Her gift is and was genius. I only hope she didn't leave because Paula is coming...that would not be a fair trade because Mia is in a classs all her own.

Mia Michaels is simply brilliant. BRILLIANT
  • October 20, 2009 - 11:15am Care Bear Says:

I must be the exception to the rule. I DID NOT LIKE her numbers! Whenever there was a weird number I said to myself that it had to be a Mia number & I was right. Out of all the seasons there was only one number of hers that I liked and that was the one with the flowers in it & I think Lacey Swimmer was the female dancer in that number. I'll bet "So you think you can Dance" people are sorry that they cut Riquel Olander in Las Vegas for a previous season. Riquel was one of the dancers in "We are Heroes," the team that recently won the title of America's Best Dance Crew on MTV. Also, one last thought on dance shows. DO NOT LET Donny Osmond win "Dancing with the Stars." He was the one who said that Mel Brown didn't deserve to win when she was on because she had background dance experience. So DOES HE!

Sad sad sad!!! Anyone know WHY she quit or she just wants to "move on"? :(
  • October 18, 2009 - 3:04pm Sizz Says:

Noooooooooo!! She is my favorite choreographer on the show. Her dances ooze flair & thoughfulness. That is talent when a choreographer's unique signature is recognizable within each of her dances. Her pieces move me. I can't believe this! Mia Michaels is so creative & quirky & intelligent...so many of us will miss her contributions to SYTYCD. Remember the "Addiction" piece starring Kayla & Kupono she created a few months ago? Amazing, transfixing, emotion-filled. Ugh...I hope this doesn't mean we'll see no more of her & her work. Love you, Mia!

This is a freaking tragedy. I love her so much. She's an inspiration for women of all sizes and a damn brilliant choreographer!!
