Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough have called it quits.

The couple, who met on Dancing With the Stars and have been dating for a year, announced their split on Twitter Friday evening.

"Hi everyone, we wanted you all to know directly from us, that Shannon & I have decided to end our relationship as boyfriend & girlfriend...," they each posted in matching Twitter messages. "However, we love and care about each other very much and will reamin friends and in each others lives."

A few hours later, the the 35-year-old actress -- who began a relationship with the professional dancer during the hit show's sixth season -- thanked fans for their understanding.

"Thank you everyone for all your sweet words & encouragement -- it really means a lot to me!" Elizabeth posted.
