Nice digs if you can get ’em! Come August, the 2016 Olympic organizing committees will be sitting pretty on the high seas near Rio de Janeiro, in a luxury Norwegian cruise ship.
USA Today reports that the Norwegian Getaway will serve as a “floating hotel” from August 4 to 22 for members of the International Olympic Federation, the National Organizing Committees and the Rio Host Committee.
The ship will be anchored at the Pier Maua for the entirety of the Games. It reportedly holds 4,000 people and comes equipped with a multi-level sports complex, a casino, an open-air promenade and several different restaurants and bars.
The news comes amid reports of complaints from athletes about the Olympic Village. As previously reported, Australian Olympians initially refused to stay in the rooms assigned to them due to problems with the plumbing and wiring.
“Water has come through the ceiling, resulting in large puddles on the floor around cabling and wiring,” Australian Olympic Committee chef de mission Kitty Chiller said at the time, adding that there were “blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring.”
Olympic officials rushed to address the issues, saying they were dealing with “some adjustments” that needed to be made. “Every Olympic Village, because of their magnitude, needs some adjustments until it becomes perfect,” organizing committee president Carlos Nuzman said, per The New York Times.
Since then, 2,000 athletes and officials have moved in, according to the Olympics website. Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, settled into his room in the Village on Thursday, July 28. He plans to sleep there “as often as possible.”
