The great American artist Ellsworth Kelly has passed away at the age of 92, The New York Times reports.
The abstract artist's death was announced by his art dealer, Matthew Marks, of the Matthew Marks Gallery in Manhattan, who told the outlet the artist had died at his home in Spencertown, New York, on Sunday, December 27.
Kelly was born in Newburgh, New York, in 1923 and served in the U.S. military during World War II. After the war, he studied art in France for several years, putting on his first solo show at the Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre in Paris in 1951. He later returned to New York.
Gwyneth Paltrow took to Instagram as news of Kelly's passing broke to share a photograph of herself and the art legend together. "#ellsworthkelly leaves us today having impacted the way we see the world. Rest in peace dear Ellsworth," she wrote.
Katie Holmes also took to Instagram to share images of the famed artist's work.
Historian Simon Schama responded to news of Kelly's death via Twitter. "Sorry to hear of Ellsworth Kelly's passing; another giant gone," he wrote. "Intense radiance through deceptive simplicity; wizard of the cunning line."
Ellsworth is survived by his husband, Jack Shear, and his brother David.
