In the clear. Scott Weiland’s bandmate Tommy Black will not face drug possession charges related to the death of the Stone Temple Pilots frontman.
According to rock music website Alternative Nation, police dropped the charges against Black because it would be too difficult to prove that the drugs that caused Weiland’s death belonged to the bassist.
Black also shared the article on his Facebook page on Saturday, December 19.
On Thursday, Minnesota's Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed that Weiland, 48, had died from an accidental “mixed drug toxicity.”
In a release, it was revealed that Weiland had evidence of cocaine, ethanol and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) in his system at his time of death.
Weiland, who was the frontman for bands including Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, died suddenly on December 3, leading fans to speculate about what exactly led to his death.
Black was arrested one day later, after detectives found a small quantity of cocaine in the tour bus that Weiland and Black shared, and where Weiland’s body was found.
Weiland had long struggled with drug abuse, and in a letter published by Rolling Stone shortly after his death, his ex-wife Mary Forsberg-Weiland, noted that Weiland's substance abuse had deeply affected their two children — Noah, 15, and Lucy, 13 — over the years.
“The truth is, like so many other kids, they lost their father years ago,” she wrote. “What they truly lost on December 3rd was hope.”
