Amal Clooney

Amal Clooney (born Amal Ramzi Alamuddin) is a Lebanese-British international human rights lawyer and the wife of actor George Clooney. Amal was born in Beirut and moved with her family to England at age 2 after the Lebanese Civil War. She attended school in London before earning a law degree from Oxford University’s St. Hugh’s College in 2000. She went on to earn an LLM from New York University School of Law in 2002, where she received the Jack J. Katz Memorial Award. She also clerked for future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Amal began her legal career at New York law firm Sullivan & Cromwell before moving into international law. She worked at the International Court of Justice and later served on tribunals including the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. She has also advised the United Nations and served as the U.K.’s Special Envoy on media freedom.

Amal has received honors including the 2020 Gwen Ifill Award, the 2021 Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Award, the 2022 Time Woman of the Year honor and the 2024 Legal 500 International Law Junior of the Year Award. She cofounded the Clooney Foundation for Justice with her husband in 2016 and has coauthored books including The Right to a Fair Trial in International Law (2020).

Amal met George in 2013 through a mutual friend. They married in 2014 and welcomed twins Ella and Alexander in 2017.
