Emma Thompson Jokes She “Didn’t Have Sex for Six Months” Because of Perm

Emma Thompson attends the premiere of "Saving Mr. Banks"
"I just wanted to freshen it up," she told Us Weekly of her new haircut and color at the Saving Mr. Banks screening in NYC on Dec. 11, 2013.

Some hairstyles come at a cost — according to Emma Thompson.

The Saving Mr. Banks star, 54, told Parade in its Dec. 12 weekend issue that she resented her prim and permed hairstyle in the film for several reasons. "It was a nightmare!" the star told the mag of the short, tightly-knotted curls bunched close to her head. "People would bleat in the streets as I went by."

But that's not all. Thompson confessed the brunette perm also prevented her from enjoying married life with hubby of 10 years Greg Wise.

"I didn’t have sex for six months!” she joked. (Thompson was married to first husband Kenneth Branagh for six years, until their marriage ended in 1995 following Branagh's affair with another famous actress: Helena Bonham Carter. "Helena and I made our peace years and years ago," the Love Actually star said in an interview last month.)

Saving her sex life, Thompson reverted her hair color back to blonde and got a sleek haircut after filming had commenced. "I just wanted to freshen it up," she told Us Weekly of her hair at the Saving Mr. Banks screening at Monkey Bar in NYC on Dec. 11. "I like it," she added.

Thompson plays Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks, opposite Tom Hanks. On Thursday, she was nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe in the Movie Drama category. The film hit theaters on Friday, Dec. 13.
