After a federal judge in San Francisco struck down Proposition 8 on Wednesday — which previously denied same-sex couples the right to marry in the state of California — celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Ellen DeGeneres and Paris Hilton flooded the Internet to express their support for U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker's decision.
"This news is amazing! Its about time! Congrats to everyone!" Kim, 29, Tweeted.
Kim's sister Khloe, 26, blogged about the news: "I know we're still not out of the woods here and the decision will likely be appealed and taken to Supreme court but that doesn't mean today isn't a day to celebrate dolls! So go out and party and be merry with the people you love."
Former American Idol judge DeGeneres — who wed Australian actress Portia de Rossi in 2008, shortly before Prop. 8 was instituted — summed up her feelings with a brief update: "This just in: Equality won!"
De Rossi, 37, added: "I am ecstatic that proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California. This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all."
And Hilton, 29 — who's spent most of her summer vacationing in Europe — added: "What a huge historical day for equal rights in this country! They finally overturned Prop 8! There shouldn't be a law on true love."
Other stars supporting the new ruling on Twitter include pop star Britney Spears, Kelly Osbourne, former *NYSNC member Lance Bass, Saturday Night Live comedian Seth Meyers, Grammy Award-winning singer Pink, actress Nia Vardalos, Ricky Martin, singer Solange Knowles and Lindsay Lohan's ex, Samantha Ronson.
