A star is Bourne — again! Eight years after he last played Jason Bourne, Matt Damon is returning to the franchise for yet another sequel. And as you can see in the first photo from the set, which was posted to the official Bourne Facebook page on Tuesday, Sept. 8, he’s in fine form. (Understatement of the year?)
In the pic, a shirtless Damon, 44, stands amid a crowd of other men, wrapping his hand as if preparing for a bare-knuckle boxing match. He’s a little dirty and roughed up, but his physique has never looked better or stronger.
“Matt Damon is back as Bourne!” the accompanying caption read. “Producer Frank Marshall shared this photo from the first day of principal photography. See the next chapter in the Bourne series July 2016.”
The as-yet-untitled sequel will be the Oscar winner’s fourth stint as Bourne, and the fifth film in the franchise overall. He previously played the amnesiac former CIA assassin in 2002’s The Bourne Identity, 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy, and 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum.
Jeremy Renner starred in the most recent Bourne film, 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, but Damon never really let go. “I think if [Bourne Legacy] doesn’t work, we can just ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen, and that’d be fine,” he told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2011. “But I expect that it will work and only help us if we did another one, which I’d love to do.”
The actor’s only caveat was that Paul Greengrass — who helmed the second and third movies — be in the director’s chair again. Julia Stiles, who played CIA operative Nicky Parsons in the previous films, is also returning.
