Oops! Russ Mayfield fell asleep when his wife, Paola Mayfield, was in labor with their son, Axel.
“We were counting the contractions together, we were going through it,” the new dad, 31, explained to Us Weekly exclusively. “She was in between contractions, and this is my nature. You give me a moment, I can pass out. I can fall asleep to any movie. I just allow myself, and I did. I allowed myself to relax, and I fell asleep.”
He added, “Then as soon as she kicked into her contractions again, I just snapped back awake.”
After this, Paola, 32, felt like she really needed to push. “I pushed five contractions, and he was finally out,” the reality star told Us of the last stage of her 13-hour labor. “Five really painful contractions.”
The 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? stars welcomed their son on New Year’s Day. “What an amazing way to start a new year, while I was hearing the fireworks and people telling me, ‘Happy New Year,’ I was just focused on meeting my baby, it wasn’t easy but it was totally worth it,” Paola told Us Weekly in a statement at the time. “My little miracle is so beautiful and calm. I feel so blessed and I can’t believe I am a mom now! I’m ready to start this new adventure and to be the best mom for baby Axel.”
Now, the little one is reaching new milestones and looking more and more like his dad. “He’s got Mama’s attitude,” Russ told Us.
As for their parenting styles, the couple admitted that they don’t always line up. “Pao is definitely more overprotective,” Russ said. “I’m more relaxed on a lot of things, and there’s definitely compromise and there’s definitely heated discussions.”
TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? airs Sundays at 8/7c.
