Back and forth! Naya Rivera opened up to Us Weekly exclusively about the key to balancing the second season of Step Up: High Water and her 3-year-old son, Josey.
“It was a lot of back and forth,” the actress, 32, said on the “Watch With Us” podcast on Tuesday, March 19. “Luckily, they are really great about my schedule and knowing that I do have a 3-year-old, and so I would get some long weekends here and there, and I’d fly back [from Atlanta to Los Angeles]. I’d bring my son with me for like a month and a half.”
The Glee alum added: “It definitely was a juggling act, but it was good. It’s refreshing, and we shoot during the summer, so it’s sort of like one big summer vacation. … In our business, [families] are something that you always have to … work around.”
Rivera shares her son with her ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey. The two welcomed Josey in September 2015 and finalized their divorce three years later.
On top of parenting and acting, the Sorry Not Sorry author also has a children’s clothing line on her plate.
“I had this idea and started it grass roots all by myself,” she told Us. “Found a manufacturer, and designed everything myself, and really just made that my full time job when I was done with this season. … When I’m away, I’ll pass it up to some people who help with it, and then when I’m back, it’s my baby again.”
Her son has already been complimented on his stylish pieces. “When I dropped him off this morning at preschool, there was a substitute teacher and she was like, ‘I need to go shopping with you, Josey,’” Rivera said. “He was wearing fringe pants.”
So how does the singer make time for herself? “When I find little windows here and there, I’m getting better about really making a conscious effort to do that,” she told Us. “I’ll go and get my nails done or get a facial.”
