Influencer Nara Smith always wanted to be a young mother.
“I was 19 when I had my first and I had my last a year ago [when] I just turned 23. She was born on my birthday,” Smith, now 25, said on the Thursday, October 8, episode of the “Aspire” podcast. “I wanted kids younger. I didn’t know how young, but I knew I didn’t want to be an old mom.”
Nara first became a parent in 2020, welcoming daughter Rumble, now 5, with husband Lucky Blue Smith. In addition to Rumble, the couple share son Slim, 5, and daughters Whimsy, 2, and Fawnie, 11 months. (Lucky, 28, is also the father of daughter Gravity, 9, from a previous relationship.)
Nara partly attributed her decision to embrace young motherhood to advice she received from her own parents.
“My dad, he had us at 45,” she explained, referring to her siblings. “He said, ‘I wish I would have had you earlier because [of] my energy.’ He had a transparent conversation with us about it, and I saw that and heard him.”
Nara continued, “Then, when I met Lucky, he was on the same page about having kids early as well. It, kind of, just all slotted into place, and I couldn’t be more grateful because I don’t think kids hold you back.”
Nara and Lucky have each continued working as professional models and content creators while raising their blended family.
“You just have to plan more and schedule more and outsource help if you need to. But at the end of the day, to me, it doesn’t make a major difference in my career or what I’m doing,” Nara stated of parenthood. “And if anything, it just inspires them to work hard. I’m very grateful to be able to work as much as I do and provide for them, and it was the best decision.”
Nara, a self-proclaimed “workoholic,” has since learned to balance her career responsibilities with motherhood — especially after Whimsy was diagnosed with cancer late last year. (Nara and Lucky announced in July that their daughter is now in remission.)
“It took a lot of trial and error and a lot of guilt on my behalf being like, ‘I need to figure out my schedule better,’ or when Whimsy got sick, ‘We actually need help. There’s no way we can juggle careers, traveling, a sick kid, all of that without any help,’” she said on Thursday’s episode. “We had my mom come out, my dad’s coming out [and] we hired a nanny. It’s all just been, like, figuring out what we’re comfortable with and also letting go of that guilt.”
