Grand romantic gestures are lovely (especially if they involve plane tickets)! But Amy Betters-Midtvedt, a mom of five from Appleton, Wisconsin, says the little things matter more.
“Listen up young ones,” Betters-Midtvedt began in a Facebook post published Thursday, October 26. “This is what your knight in shining armor looks like when you are in your 40’s.”
In the accompanying photo, the 44-year-old’s husband, Todd Midtvedt, is seen arriving at Aldi’s grocery store with his credit card in hand because she forgot her wallet.
“Not sure you can tell, but he’s smiling at me. Yup . . . he had to leave work and he is smiling. His only words of admonishment were, ‘You’re not supposed to be grocery shopping, I said I’d go this week,’” recalled Betters-Midtvedt. “Seriously. Young people, this is what love look like when you’re old and it’s ridiculous how awesome it is.”
Betters-Midtvedt knew back in college that she hit the jackpot with the 47-year-old creative director.
“You guys, there were signs it would be this way, so I have tips for you,” she wrote. “In college this love looked like boyfriend Todd running to the store for a danish I was craving or watching me and my friends on the dance floor long after he wanted to leave the bar or him being known across campus by the flower backpack he was carrying, which of course was mine.”
When it comes to picking a partner, Betters-Midtvedt had some solid advice. “Watch how he treats you when Instagram isn’t looking. That’s where the signs are,” she shared. “Choose the man who will carry your too heavy flowered backpack in public because he will also be the man who bails you out at ALDI’s . . . with a smile and a hug. And that my friends is true love.”
Betters-Midtevdt, who blogs at Hiding in the Closet with Coffee, counts her blessings every day.
“Flowers and candy and all that society says goes into romance is not what is really important,” she tells Us Weekly. “We can look right into our own homes and see that how we treat each other each day in the little moments is what really matters. These little moments build our whole lives.”
