The death certificate for Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck’s mother reveals new details about her cancer battle and final days following her death at age 83.
Chris Affleck died from cardiopulmonary arrest, according to the certificate exclusively obtained by Us on Tuesday, July 28. Other conditions leading to her death included pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which she had for months, per the certificate.
The death certificate indicated that she died “visiting son’s residence” at 10:52 a.m. on June 2. Records show that the address is connected to Ben.
Chris’ remains were in transit to Earth Funeral in Las Vegas when the certificate was filed. No autopsy was performed.
News broke on Friday, July 24, that Ben, 53, and Casey’s mother died one month prior following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Her greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school,” Chris’ obituary published via The Boston Globe read. “She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026. She died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later.”
According to the obit, Chris was initially given six months to live after receiving her cancer diagnosis in December 2025.
While Chris was arguably best known as the mother of children Ben and brother Casey, 50, she was a success in her own right. (Chris shared her sons with ex-husband Timothy Affleck.)
Born in New York City in 1942, Chris later graduated from Harvard University and worked for more than three decades as a public school teacher.
She retired in 2008 and went on to volunteer for President Barack Obama’s campaign. Chris was also an organizer for the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine and a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape project in Truro, Massachusetts.
Ben, for his part, has been vocal over the years about how pivotal his mother was in jumpstarting his career after she introduced him to her former college roommate, who happened to be a big casting director.
Ben showed his mom some love in 1998 when he brought her as his plus one for the Oscars where his film Good Will Hunting was nominated for nine awards.
After he and Matt Damon won for Best Original Screenplay, Ben recalled doing the only natural thing: hugging his mom.
“We were sitting next to our moms and we won, and we kind of hugged our moms. I remember how everyone had made such a big thing out of it as if this was such a novelty,” Ben told Vanity Fair after the big night. “I remember thinking, being insecure, like, ‘Why? Why is it weird that we’re bringing our moms?’ Who else do you think we would bring?”
Following her death, Chris is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey, and her five grandchildren.
