Bruce Jenner made several revelations about his transition from male to female during his 20/20 special with Diane Sawyer on Friday, April 24. The former Olympian also revisited some of the darkest times in his life. During the emotional and brave interview, Jenner specifically revealed that he once contemplated suicide last year.
The moment took place after an appointment he had to get a tracheal shave was leaked to paparazzi. He returned to his Malibu home by himself completely overwhelmed.
"That night, I thought, 'It's over.' I was walking up and down this hall back and forth all night long. Heart pounding," Jenner, 65, told Sawyer. "I thought, 'Wouldn't the easiest thing to do right now is go in the other room, get a gun. Pain is over. Done. Go to a better place.'"
He added: "I thought, 'I can't do something like that. I want to know how this story ends.'"
Jenner hopes his story will help others, but said he's in no way the spokesperson for the transgender community. The interview will be his last as Bruce, and he will soon emerge as a woman.
"So to everyone watching, if you could say to them, 'When you think of me, please be…'" Sawyer asked him at the end of the interview.
"Open-minded," he said. "Have an open mind and an open heart. I'm not this bad person, I'm just doing what I have to do."
