On Sept. 9, the former teen idol, 65, was in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. when he allegedly sideswiped a truck and then attempted to cover his license plate as he fled the scene. Authorities tell The Sun Sentinel that Cassidy drove away with a flat tire, but was later found at a nearby hospital for what he said was a scheduled appointment.
A witness at the scene of the accident snapped a photo of the car’s tag number before it sped away, which was how police tracked down Cassidy.
The former Partridge Family star is also being charged with driving with an expired tag, as the 2014 Kia Sportage’s registration had an Aug. 31, 2014 expiration date.
“There’s certainly a lot of major inconsistencies in the report,” Cassidy’s lawyer, Jason Forman, told The Sentinel in response to the charges.
It’s been a rough few years for Cassidy. This past February, the former Celebrity Apprentice contestant filed for bankruptcy. In documents obtained by Us, Cassidy owes hundreds of thousands to creditors, with debts to companies such as Wells Fargo, American Express, and Citi.
And last year, the ‘70s and ‘80s heartthrob was arrested for drunk driving; he faced similar arrests in August 2013 and November 2010.
On a more personal front, Cassidy’s wife of 23 years, Sue, filed for divorce in February 2014, telling TMZ that the split had been “looming for some time.”
“I am truly heartbroken that our marriage is ending,” she said at the time. The pair share son Beau, 24, and Cassidy is also father to Arrow actress Katie Cassidy, 28, with ex-girlfriend Sherry Williams.
An arraignment hearing for Cassidy’s recent run-in with the law has been scheduled for Oct. 27.
