So festive and so furry! If you’ve ever dreamed of having a dog deliver your Christmas tree, it could happen for you!
Plow Farms in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, offered quite a unique experience this holiday season: Newfoundland (Newfie) pooches delivered customers’ Christmas trees during an event the farm called the Newfoundland Day Tree Pull. The family-owned farm shared about the event, which included more than 40 dogs, via an adorable Facebook video earlier this month that has since gone viral. In the clip, Newfies can be seen pulling Christmas trees through the snow for happy customers.
Followers took to the comments of the post to compliment the working breed of dogs, which often weigh more than 120 pounds and are well-equipped to pull trees. One Facebook user, a Newfie owner, even asked if her pups can come along for the ride next holiday season.
“Yes. We will be having the pull next year,” Plow Farms responded, noting on their Facebook page that next year’s event will take place on December 8. “We would love to have you and your ‘Newfies’ join us.”
Lindsay Eshelman, whose parents Gregg and Brenda Eshelman founded Plow Farms in the 1980s, told Today that the family began incorporating Newfies into the business in 2016. The Eshelman clan chose to do this after realizing how warmly customers have responded to Eshelman’s canines, Lillie Bell, Stella and Matilda.
Now, dozens of other Newfies gather for the annual festivities in the weeks before Christmas and hook up to 50- to 75-pound custom-made sleds that allow them to transport the trees 100-200 feet. “Dogs must have a draft certificate to pull, meaning they have been through multiple classes and training, so they know all of the commands and how to properly execute the exercise,” Lindsay told Today. “Outside of being in the fields, our dogs live in luxury and we can assure if they don’t want to work, we would gladly let them lay around the fire.”
