Oscar controversy! Sam Smith stated that he thought he might be the first openly gay star to win an Oscar on Sunday, February 28, at the 88th Academy Awards — but that claim didn’t go down well with everyone.

The British singer made mention of the possibility when he took to the stage to accept his award, along with fellow songwriter Jimmy Napes, having won the best original song category for their ballad “Writing’s on the Wall,” which was written for the 2015 James Bond thriller, Spectre.

“I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, which said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar,” a tearful Smith told the audience at L.A.’s Dolby Theatre. “If this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”

Turns it out wasn’t the case, and taking to Twitter, acclaimed screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who is engaged to British diver Tom Daley, 21, blasted Smith, 23, for his comments, reminding him that he’d won an Oscar for best original screenplay in 2009 for his movie Milk.

But his text was more than just a slap on the wrist for Smith for his lack of movie trivia knowledge: Black, 41, also chastised the British singer for being a little overfriendly with his fiancé, Daley.

“Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé…,” the movie writer and LGBT activist wrote, adding: “Here’s a start:” and linked to a video of himself accepting his award at the 81st Academy Awards.

Fans went wild after the blatant Twitter diss, sharing memes and GIFs about the totally awkward moment.
