A legend remembered. Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey died at the age of 67 in NYC on Monday, January 18. According to his friend Bob Seger, he had been in the hospital since November battling health issues.
Frey was born in Detroit, Michigan, and formed the American rock band the Eagles — with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner — in 1971. The group split in 1980 but reunited in 1994. Four years later, Frey was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Frey — who penned Eagles classics such as “Hotel California,” “Take It Easy” and “Tequila Sunrise” — also had a successful solo career in the 1980s, with hits including “The Heat Is On” and “You Belong to the City.” He also dabbled in acting, with roles in shows such as Wiseguy and South of Sunset, plus an episode of Miami Vice.
Frey’s bandmates and fellow stars have paid tribute following the news of his death. “My Mom used to play Eagles records for me on my way to grade school,” Justin Timberlake tweeted on Monday. “We lost one of the greatest songwriters ever today … #RIPGlennFrey.”
Country superstar Brad Paisley wrote: “So saddened and shocked by the loss of Glenn Frey. Thank you for the music that paved the way for so many others.”
Henley also spoke out about his longtime friend and bandmate. “He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction,” he said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight. “But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved.”
Frey is survived by his wife, Cindy Millican, and their three children.
