Jimmy Kimmel quipped that he and Matthew McConaughey got closer than ever before.
While chatting with Woody Harrelson during an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, September 21, the talk show host, 48, detailed his wild encounter with McConaughey, 56, at the 2026 Emmys earlier this week.
“I wanna share this story because I’m not sure if you even know the whole story because of what happened,” he began.
“So, the in memoriam montage, my friend Cleto [Escobedo III] who passed away, was in the montage and I started getting choked up,” he explained, noting that he excused himself and went to the bathroom. “Im washing my hands and I notice next to me is Matthew McConaughey. He’s at the urinal.”
McConaughey then asked Kimmel if he was OK. “He turns to me and he gives me a very nice hug,” Kimmel shared. “I am hugging him for a little while and I said, ‘Is your penis out?’ and he said, ‘Yes it is.’”
Instead of pulling away, the Interstellar star told Kimmel he was going to “rub it up against [him] a little bit.”
Harrelson, 56, also happened to be in the restroom at the time of the incident. He stepped out of the stall during their hug. “I thought, I mean OK,” Harrelson laughed. “I never try and grade or to critique what other people are doing. I figured you guys, whatever your thing is, I didn’t want to be the guy to say ‘No.’ Not in the restroom at the Emmys!”
He added that after they all left the bathroom, the trio had a “group hug.”
“I will tell you, that lightened the moment considerably,” Kimmel said. “Cleto would have loved that very much.”
Escobedo, who led the house band for Jimmy Kimmel Live! died at age 59 in November 2025 from cardiogenic shock following complications from a liver transplant. At the time, Kimmel got emotional while remembering the musician in a monologue, whom he met as a child when they were neighbors in Las Vegas.
“Eventually we met [and] became friends and not just regular friends. We became 24/7, ‘Mom please let me sleep over please’ kind of friends,” he shared. “One summer I slept over at the Escobedo house 33 nights in a row.”
He continued, “We loved all the same things. Baseball, fishing, boxing, Ali, Richard Prior, Eddie Murphy, Woody Allen, Michael McDonald, Huie Lewis, Stevie Wonder, and most of all, we loved David Letterman.”
