Another rant in the books. Kanye West told white publications to stop writing about black music, and explained why via Twitter on Monday, February 15.
“To Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, New York Times, and any other white publication. Please do not comment on black music anymore,” West, 38, tweeted to his more than 18 million followers. “I love love love white people but you don't understand what it means to be the great grandson of ex slaves and make it this far.”
“The system is designed for colored people to fail and one of our only voices is music,” he continued. “One of our only ways out is music.” (West posed for the cover of RS in February 2006.)
West’s latest controversial comments come on the heels of him begging Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to bail him out of his $53 million debt. The rapper wrote that he’s this generation’s Walt Disney and needs more money to “bring more beautiful ideas to the world.” (Solange Knowles recently slammed NYT writer Jon Caramanica for resurfacing comments she made in 2013. At the time, she reportedly tweeted that blogs should hire writers that understand the hip hop culture.)
West — who performed on Saturday Night Live over the weekend — has been busy promoting his new album, The Life of Pablo. Last week, he made headlines when he debuted his record, as well as his song “Famous” during his Yeezy Season 3 collection at New York Fashion Week on Thursday, February 11. Taylor Swift’s fans were none too pleased when one of his lyrics claimed that he made “that bitch famous,” referring to their awkward 2009 MTV Video Music Awards run-in.
West’s seventh studio album was originally supposed to be released last Friday but is currently available for download on Jay Z’s Tidal.
“This was made with love. Only God can judge me. So I only expect love back!!!” West tweeted on Monday. “My album will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale… You can only get it on Tidal. Please to all my friends fans and music lovers. Sign up to Tidal now.”
