Lamar Odom was heading to New York City to surprise his son, Lamar Odom Jr., for his 14th birthday when the dramatic airplane incident occurred, a source exclusively tells Us Weekly.
The athlete, 36, was heading to NYC from Los Angeles International Airport on Monday, July 11, when he allegedly got kicked off a Delta flight because he got drunk at the airport and vomited upon boarding the plane.
The former NBA player caught a later flight and has since surfaced in the Big Apple. Odom is currently staying at his aunt’s house, and his two kids, Lamar Jr. and Destiny, came over to visit to try to “talk some sense into him” on Tuesday, July 12, the insider adds.
He was also spotted shopping at a men’s clothing store in Queens and at Mia Sushi & Steakhouse in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood on Tuesday, and he posed for several Instagram photos with fans at both locations. According to TMZ, he was photographed at CityScapes Gentlemen’s Club in Queens that night as well.
“Lamar left his apartment [on Monday] after buying a plane ticket to NYC to go see his son and surprise his son for his birthday [on Tuesday],” the source tells Us. “Because the plane didn’t leave until that evening, Lamar drove to a bar in Santa Monica and started drinking there.”
As Us Weekly previously reported, Odom “got really angry and started getting drunk” at the Santa Monica establishment before making his way to LAX. Shortly before his plane took off, he “flipped out and got depressed.”
“It’s really sad,” the insider added. “He was doing so well in his [rehab] program.”
The former Lakers player has had several big changes in his life in recent weeks. Odom officially filed his response to Khloé Kardashian’s divorce filing on Friday, July 8, about two months after the reality star filed for divorce for the second time. Us Weekly also revealed last month that Kardashian, 32, booted Odom from the Calabasas, California, rental home that she was leasing for him.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star lashed out on Twitter on Tuesday after a fan criticized her for not being supportive of her ex following the plane incident and for flaunting her new romance with Trey Songz. She tweeted, “Stay in your f–king lane little girl. You know nothing about anything. You’re a sheep herded by society.”
