Somewhere, Joan Rivers is probably laughing. As the news broke that the comedy legend had passed away at age 81 on Thursday, Sept. 4, after suffering complications from a minor throat procedure, celebrities took to social media to express their condolences.
Within an hour of the tragic news, Girls creator Lena Dunham, who had often been picked on by the late Rivers, tweeted a series of thoughts on her passing.
“Watching Joan Rivers do standup at age 81 was incredible: athletic, jaw-dropping, terrifying, essential. It never stopped. Neither will she,” Dunham began. “I told Maron I'd have a zinger when Joan died. But I didn't think she ever would. She felt eternal, and anyway, zingers are her territory.”
That didn’t stop the HBO star from getting in one last jab at the trailblazing critic and comedienne, writing, “That being said, Joan is gone but a piece of her lives on: her nose, because it's made of polyurethane.”
The joke was quickly retweeted and favorited by Dunham’s 1.7 million followers. Some thought Rivers would have loved the quip, while others expressed that the zinger was “too soon.”
