Consider it the ultimate sign of big-sister approval! Malia Obama adorably gave her younger sister, Sasha, a big ol' thumbs-up when she spotted her chatting with Ryan Reynolds at the Canada state dinner at the White House on Thursday, March 10.
In an image that has since gone viral online, Malia, 17, looks on as Sasha, 14, beams and gestures while talking to the Canadian-born Deadpool star, 39, who attended the dinner with his wife, Blake Lively.
Though she’s blurred out in the background of the image, Malia is very clearly shooting her sister two thumbs-up and has a smile on her face that can only mean one thing: attagirl.
This marks the first time the sisters have attended a state dinner since their father, Barack, was elected president in 2008. Both Obama gals wore beautiful floor-length Naeem Khan gowns for the event, while mom Michelle wowed in a Jason Wu creation.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later gave a nod to the teens during his speech.
“It’s also touching to meet Malia and Sasha, who are here at their first state dinner,” he said, referencing his father, former Canadian Prime Minisher Pierre. “And quite frankly, the memories for me of being a kid and not being old enough to attend these kinds of events with my father almost makes me wish I had gone through my teenage years as a child of a world leader — but not quite.”
Trudeau added that he admired both girls for their “extraordinary strength” and “grace, through what is a remarkable childhood and young adulthood that will give you extraordinary strength and wisdom beyond your years for the rest of your life.”
