Hear that sound? It's millions of "D'ohs" resounding around the world. Marge and Homer Simpson are legally separating after 26 seasons of marriage, longtime executive producer of The Simpsons, Al Jean, confirmed this week.
Jean revealed the upsetting plotline to Variety, saying Simpsons fans will have to brace for a rocky 27th season ahead. "In the premiere, it’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy," the series' showrunner explained. "And it’s an incredible strain on the marriage. Homer and Marge legally separate."
Rather than attempt to work things out with his wife of nearly three decades, the Simpson family's patriarch realizes there are other fish in the sea. "Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham," Jean continued. "We’ll have cameos from the other women from Girls."
Several other unnerving story lines will play out this fall when the series returns. Jean told ATX Television Festival attendees this past weekend that Bart Simpson will (kind of?) be killed by the creepy villain Sideshow Bob on the show's Halloween special.
"I'm one of the people that always wanted to see the Coyote eat the Road Runner," Jean noted (via Entertainment Weekly). "When I was a kid, I wanted the rabbit to get the Trix… I hated frustration comedy, so we'll scratch that itch on the Halloween special."
The 27th season of The Simpsons will premiere on Sept. 27.
