We’ve reached peak Miley Cyrus, folks. If you thought the singer couldn’t top her 2013 “Blurred Lines” duet with Robin Thicke, you were wrong — so, so wrong. This year’s hostess, 22, proved as much at the 2015 VMAs on Sunday, Aug. 30, when she closed out the show with a totally wacky (and totally Miley) performance of her new song “Dooo It!” — where the “it” in question is smoking a lot of pot.
Taking the stage in a colorful, complicated ensemble involving an eye-shaped nipple cover, a pink-and-gold leotard with one pant leg, and a pair of giant lips, Cyrus belted out lyrics primarily about her love of marijuana and peace.
“Yeah, I smoke pot,” she crooned. “Yeah, I love peace / But I don’t give a f–k / I ain’t no hippie.” (Incidentally, Cyrus has a nonprofit called the Happy Hippie Foundation, which aims to help and empower homeless and LGBTQ youth.)
She was backed up, natch, by an army of similarly outfitted drag queens (including several alum from various seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race), who strutted and twerked and just generally slayed the VMAs stage. Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne also made an appearance, wielding a slim cannon that he stuck between Cyrus’ legs and used to fire smoke out of her crotch.
The performance left the pop star’s fellow VMAs attendees speechless. Crowd shots showed Macklemore and Frankie Grande, among others, watching the show with wide-eyed shock. When she finished — showered by streamers and applause — Cyrus announced the free release of her new album, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, online.
Of course, the song wasn’t Cyrus’ only noteworthy moment of the night. Minutes before her performance, the former Disney star was changing backstage when the cameras cut to her to take the show to commercial. Cyrus was holding a curtain in front of her naked body, but it slipped as she grabbed the mic, exposing one of her nipples.
“Oh, sorry, my tit’s out!” she quipped.
