While recalling the horrific shooting that occurred in Orlando on Sunday, June 12, shooting survivor Chris Hansen said that “everybody was scrambling” to get out of the nightclub.
“I haven’t had much sleep yet, maybe three hours since everything has happened,” Hansen told Today’s Matt Lauer while recalling the massacre that occurred at gay nightclub Pulse early Sunday morning.
“I was on the edge by the bathroom … kind of facing the bar, and as the gunman came in he was shooting towards the dance floor, so it was easier for me to get out,” Hansen said. “After a couple shots, you just hear the ‘bang, bang, bang’ and you’re like, ‘OK, this isn’t the song. This is reality.’ And you hear the screaming and you see the blood and the guy next to me falls over … and you see those in the VIP area going down … and then that’s when I go down and I’m like, 'I’ve got to crawl out of here’ … I wasn’t running … I’m not gonna be a moving target,” he told Lauer, adding that “everybody was scrambling out.”
Hansen told CNN that after he made his way out of the nightclub he attempted to help others.
“There was blood everywhere … I was helping somebody — I didn’t know if he was dead or alive — I took my bandana off and … shoved it in his bullet hole.”
As previously reported by Us Weekly, gunman Omar Mateen killed 49 people after opening fire inside the gay nightclub early Sunday morning. Prior to the shooting, Mateen reportedly called 911 from the nightclub and pledged allegiance to an ISIS leader. The terrorist group has since claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident marks the most deadly mass shooting in U.S. history.
During an interview with ABC News on Sunday, the shooter’s father opened up about his son. “He surprised me because I didn’t see anything irregular with him,” Seddique Mateen said of Omar. “I saw him yesterday afternoon. Everything was normal.” Seddique added that he didn’t think his son was “radicalized.”
According to multiple reports, Omar became enraged months prior to the shooting after he saw two men kissing in Miami.
