Teen Mom’s Tyler Baltierra opened up about his relationship with daughter Carly after he and his wife, Catelynn Lowell, gave her up for adoption.
Baltierra, 34, got candid about where he stands with Carly, 16, whom he and Lowell, 34, gave up for adoption during a Monday, April 27, episode of the “Cake For Dinner” podcast.
“As far as our relationship goes, we don’t really have one,” Baltierra said.
He explained, “I set up an email for her that me and Cate will write to and that’s pretty much the only way we’re maintaining any kind of communication.”
Back in 2009, Carly was adopted by Brandon and Teresa Davis shortly after Lowell gave birth to her at just 16 years old during an episode of MTV’s 16 & Pregnant. While initially an open adoption, Brandon and Teresa closed the adoption in 2023, which led to restricted communication for Baltierra and Lowell.
“We figured if we set up an email for her, and write to it, and one day if she ever wants it, we can give her the login and she can kind of just go through the email herself,” Baltierra added, explaining that when he and Lowell are thinking about her, they send a message, along with photos of her younger siblings. “We let her know that she’s not forgotten about.”
Baltierra explained that it’s “up to” Carly if she wants to continue a relationship with him and Lowell. “Me and Cate accept the fact that she may get older and want nothing to do with us. She might not even like us, which is OK. As her birth parent, my duty is to be there to answer the questions she has as an adoptee. I think she’s owed that.”
Baltierra and Lowell, who tied the knot in 2015, went on to welcome daughters Novalee, now 11, Vaeda, 7, and Rya, 4, all of whom they raised themselves after feeling more financially stable.
During a January episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, Baltierra and Lowell opened up about Carly’s adoption closing after years of building a relationship wiht her.
“Brandon and Teresa straight up told our adoption counselor, Dawn, ‘Yeah, I had to block [Catelynn] for my mental health,’“ Lowell claimed at the time. “And I was like, ‘Your mental health, your mental health?’ I mean, it was like anxiety. I literally felt every emotion come up of when I hugged [Carly] in the hospital and told her bye.”
She also claimed that Teresa told their counselor that they’re “not allowed to send gifts anymore because it’s uncalled for.”
Baltierra added, “You have my kid, you can’t take my story, too.”
