From lovers to enemies. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris had a whirlwind romance but their split was less than amicable.
The pop star and the “I Need Your Love” producer hit it off after being introduced by Ellie Goulding in February 2015. The Scottish DJ confirmed the relationship via Instagram several months later after sharing an adorable photo of the singer’s two cats, Meredith and Olivia.
In June 2016, Us Weekly confirmed that the “Feels” artist ended things with the songwriter after dating for 15 months. “Taylor is doing OK now, but she was upset,” an insider told Us at that time. A second source added: “It just wasn’t working anymore.”
Following news of the split, Harris took to social media to share that he and Swift had gone their separate ways. “The only truth here is that a relationship came to an end & what remains is a huge amount of love and respect,” Harris tweeted. The Folklore songstress, for her part, retweeted her ex’s message.
While the twosome were initially amicable, they hit a snag when Swift began dating Tom Hiddleston shortly after their breakup. The duo had previously danced together at the Met Gala in May 2016, while the “Love Story” singer and Harris were allegedly still together. “Hiddleswift,” as the fans referred to the twosome, didn’t publicly announce their romance until the end of June 2016.
After news broke of Cats actress and Marvel actor, Swift and Harris removed any photos featuring each other from their social media accounts.
In July 2016, Swift’s rep revealed that the “Teardrops On My Guitar” artist cowrote Harris’ hit song “This Is What You Came For” (which Rihanna performs) under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg. After the news broke, Harris lashed out via social media in a series of since-deleted tweets.
“I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do,” he wrote. “I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy [Perry] ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”
Harris opened up to GQ in September 2016 about his relationship with the music icon. “It’s very difficult when something I consider so personal plays out very publicly,” he admitted. “The aftermath of the relationship was way more heavily publicized than the relationship itself.”
The Grammy award-winning singer made several alleged references to her romance with the DJ in her next projects including her subtle reference to Nils Sjöberg. Fans also speculate that the bonus track “High Fidelity,” off her October 2022 Midnights album, was about Harris.
