Mica Miller’s siblings claimed that her pastor husband, John-Paul Miller, had her involuntarily hospitalized at least one time during their tumultuous marriage.
In Netflix’s August docuseries Death of a Pastor’s Wife, Mica’s family and friends looked back on her marriage to John-Paul, 46, before she died by suicide at the age of 30 in April 2024.
In the docuseries, Mica’s siblings explained that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while she was engaged to John-Paul. As her spouse, he was designated to oversee her care and allegedly described some of her episodes as psychotic and suicidal.
The siblings also claimed that Mica was committed to a mental health facility several times over the course of their marriage and not always with her consent.
During her first stay at a facility, Mica was released less than a week before she married John-Paul in 2017. She was reportedly prescribed medication following her release.
Mica was open about her mental health struggles in life, though her siblings claimed John-Paul’s alleged emotional manipulation worsened her mental state.
The family also claimed that Mica’s final hospitalization was involuntary and that John-Paul forced her to go after he contacted a mental health facility and made false claims about her mental state.
Mica’s siblings claimed that she later told police that her husband took her car, phone and laptop during her final hospitalization, adding that both her phone and her laptop contained nude photos of her.
Before Mica’s death was ruled a suicide, John-Paul told his congregation at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that she died from “self-induced” circumstances.
“Y’all knew that she wasn’t well mentally,” he said, according to the docuseries. “And that she needed her medicine that was hard to get to her…just keep our family in your prayers.”
Following Mica’s death, police launched an investigation into the case when it was revealed that she reported she was the victim of stalking in the months leading up to her death.
While her death was ultimately ruled a suicide, John-Paul was arrested in November 2024 after authorities gathered evidence that he cyberstalked Mica from November 2022 until her death. Authorities also determined that he lied to investigators while being interviewed about the case.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced his indictment in a statement, explaining that John-Paul was accused of posting a nude photo of Mica online. He also allegedly placed tracking devices on her vehicle, in addition to once contacting her more than 50 times in a single day and manipulating her finances.
John-Paul has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently out of jail after posting bond. His case is scheduled to go to court in October.
