An Alabama woman has been arrested after she fatally shot her husband because she was annoyed with him for bothering her after she underwent heart surgery.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office announced that Sheri Mitchell-Clutts had been accused of murder of a family member using a gun while in the commission of domestic violence.
The shooting took place on the evening of Sunday, May 10, at Mitchell-Clutts, 65, and her husband Timothy Clutts’ home in Russellville.
Mitchell-Clutts called 911 and told dispatchers that she shot Clutts just a few minutes before 7:30 p.m., according to WHNT.
Upon their arrival, authorities found the victim dead as he sat in a recliner in the living room with a single gunshot wound to his chest, according to Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said that the murder weapon was found sitting on top of a cooler in the house.
Mitchell-Clutts spoke to the officers and quickly admitted that she shot her husband. However, she allegedly shared two different versions of events that led to the shooting while speaking to investigators.
She first claimed that she believed her husband had been threatening her throughout the day as he frequently checked on her because she had recently undergone heart surgery, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Her demeanor seemed obviously upset from what little interaction I had with her at the scene, but you never know what’s going through somebody’s mind,” Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver told WAFF.
Mitchell-Clutts, who underwent heart surgery two weeks before the shooting, then shared a slightly different version of events. She claimed that on May 10, her husband kept coming into her room and bothering her. She then had enough and grabbed the gun as Clutts went to watch TV by himself.
After Clutts didn’t come back to see her for a while, she went looking for him and found him in the living room chair. The sheriff’s office said that she then shot him one time.
“There’s a number of cases where someone does something like this,” Oliver said of the seemingly simple case. “You’re actually having to track them down and find them and build evidence based on the scene. And in this situation she was pretty open. Which, you know, leads us to a bunch of questions, you know, what might have been going on with her.”
Oliver added that authorities are now looking into the couple’s past, and they’re in the process of going through call logs that date back six years. “At this point, that we can find, there’s no domestic-related calls there,” Oliver added.
Mitchell-Clutts is currently in custody at Franklin County Jail with no bond. It is not currently clear if she has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.
