Talk about girl power! Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett are among the stars who’ve been offered parts in the upcoming all-female Ocean’s Eight film.
According to Deadline, the movie — a spinoff of the hit Ocean’s Eleven film franchise — has filled seven of the eight titular roles. In addition to Hathway, 33, RiRi, 28, Bullock, 52, and Blanchett, 47, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and rapper-comedian Awkwafina (Neighbors 2) are close to finalizing deals to star in the project.
The site reports that filming for the Warner Bros.-backed heist comedy, which will be produced by Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh, will begin in New York City in October.
The plan for an all-female spinoff follows the lead of Sony’s all-female Ghostbusters reboot, which premiered on Friday, July 11, to mostly positive reviews. Funny ladies Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon starred in the summer flick.
As Ocean’s fans will recall, the 2001 Ocean’s Eleven reboot — a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name, starring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, among others — told the tale of ex-convict Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his attempt get back on his feet by robbing three Las Vegas casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Terry Garcia). Two sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, followed in 2004 and 2007, respectively. The series featured actors such as Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, the late Bernie Mac and Julia Roberts.
A premiere date for Ocean’s Eight has yet to be revealed.
