Oops, Lifetime did it again! A TV movie about pop star Britney Spears‘ life is heading to the cable channel, with the network announcing the news on Wednesday, August 24.
The two-hour biopic, tentatively titled Britney, will focus on Spears’ road to success, including her various ups and downs. Natasha Bassett (Hail, Caesar!) is playing the “Oops! … I Did It Again” singer, with production beginning in September ahead of a planned 2017 premiere.
Among the turbulent moments that the film will include are her split from fellow Mickey Mouse Club alum Justin Timberlake, her parents’ divorce, her failed marriages and her conservatorship under her father. The film will also show her bouncing back from these difficulties to become the iconic and beloved performer she is today.
The film comes at a busy time for the singer, 34, who will release her latest album, Glory, Friday, August 26. She is taking part in a Carpool Karaoke segment with James Corden on The Late Late Show‘s Thursday, August 25, episode, and will deliver the world premiere performance of her single “Make Me …” at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday, August 28. This will mark her first VMAs performance in nine years.
Lifetime has made something of a cottage industry out of biopics about pop culture figures, particularly music stars. Previous TV movies on the network have included 2014’s Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, 2015’s Whitney (about the late Whitney Houston) and 2016’s Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart.
Earlier this month, Lifetime announced plans for films about JonBenet Ramsey and The Jinx subject Robert Durst.
