After kick-starting her career last year with the positive body image anthem, “All About That Bass,” Meghan Trainor didn’t expect the negative backlash surrounding the March 16 release of the music video for her latest single “Dear Future Husband.”
The song, which lists the things Trainor’s future husband needs to do to win her love and devotion, soundtracks the video of the 21-year-old singer cooking in the kitchen and scrubbing the tile floor.
Critics were quick to say that Trainor’s video was sexist and set women back by implying that they should only be domestic housewives.
MTV News spoke to Trainor about the bad buzz surrounding the video, and she admitted she wasn’t expecting some of the negative reactions.
“[I was] just surprised at the random places people are asking me if I was being sexist,” she said. “But no, I don’t believe I was [being sexist]. I think I was just writing my song to my future husband out there, wherever he is. He’s chilling right now, taking a minute getting ready for me; it’s going to be great.”
