Off Campus creator Louisa Levy is addressing claims there was a significant difference in pay between the men and women.
The “In the Vault” podcast recently released an episode featuring an alleged breakdown of how much each cast member made for their roles in the Prime Video series. The podcast quoted Belmont Cameli as making $260,000 for the whole season, while Josh Heuston earned $200,000 and Stephen Kalyn and Antonio Cipriano both got paid $120,000 each.
The cohosts claimed that Mika Abdalla and Ella Bright allegedly made much less than their male counterparts, citing their alleged salary as $160,000 per season.
In response, Levy took to the comments section to deny the podcast’s claims.
“Check your sources. These numbers are far from correct,” she replied via Instagram. “While this is absolutely an issue in the industry, as a female show runner I fight for gender pay parity in my cast.”
Based on Elle Kennedy‘s book series, Off Campus follows an elite ice hockey team — and the women in their lives — as they “grapple with love, heartbreak, and self-discovery — forging deep friendships and enduring bonds while navigating the complexities that come with transitioning into adulthood,” per the show’s official synopsis.
Season 1, which premiered in May, was centered on Hannah (Bright) and Garrett’s (Cameli) love story.
Going by Kennedy’s book order, Logan’s (Cipriano) story was expected to be next, followed by Dean’s (Kalyn) and Tucker’s (Jalen Thomas Brooks). News broke, however, that Dean and Allie (Abdalla) would be leading season 2 in a surprising shakeup.
“It’s definitely great to have the blueprint of this fabulous book series to start with, but adapting for a TV show is a little bit different,” Levy exclusively told Us Weekly in May. “We need to keep the audience’s focus in a different way.”
Levy broke down the approach from page to screen.
“We have a lot of stories told in different ways. We have eight episodes instead of the whole book,” she noted. “So we really started with the things that were super nonnegotiable — that without those things it wouldn’t be Off Campus.”
Levy continued: “From there, we added as many of the book moments as we could. We dropped them in like Easter eggs, and we just really spent time taking one’s inside character and externalizing them.”
