Prime Video’s God of War will recast a lead role after star Ryan Hurst suffered an injury on set.
Multiple outlets confirmed on Friday, July 17, that Hurst, 50, previously tore a bicep doing a stunt. He underwent surgery and is recovering after filming scenes as Kratos. The role is now going to be recast with a new actor due to the extent of Hurst’s injury, according to Deadline.
News broke in January that Hurst was joining the show alongside Callum Vinson, who plays Kratos’ son, Atreus, on the show. Production on the series, which has been renewed for two seasons, began in Vancouver in February.
God of War follows “father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye,” according to the official synopsis.
The description continued: “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Alastair Duncan, Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn round out the show.

Before God of War, Hurst appeared on The Abandons, The Walking Dead and Outsiders. He played Opie on Sons of Anarchy as well.
TV shows have recently made headlines for recasting major characters — including Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue and FBI’s CIA. In April 2025, CBS gave CIA a straight-to-series order starring Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss. Originally planned for a fall 2025 premiere, CIA was pushed to midseason after Warren Leight replaced FBI: Most Wanted‘s David Hudgins as showrunner.
The changes kept coming when Michael Michele, one of the series’ leads, left in November 2025. Days later, Eriq La Salle left the series as executive producer. He was attached to CIA since its conception and directed the pilot before his exit. CIA has since been renewed for season 2 on CBS.
Boston Blue, meanwhile, replaced Donnie Wahlberg‘s onscreen son. The spinoff, which premiered in October 2025, kicked off with Danny (Wahlberg) visiting Boston after Sean (Mika Amonsen) ended up in a coma. This version of Sean looked a little different after the role was previously played by Andrew Terraciano.
Meanwhile on ABC, Scott Speedman‘s new ABC show R.J. Decker cast Station 19’s Jaina Lee Ortiz as a series regular. She plays Emi Ochoa, a “shrewd-if-unpredictable daughter of a very powerful, very corrupt state senator” with ties to RJ’s (Speedman) past.
The character was originally named Shay Bennett and played by Weruche Opia in the pilot. After the show was picked up, it was announced that the role would be recast. In addition to Speedman and Ortiz, RJ Decker stars Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens and Bevin Bru.
